Rock-a-bye Baby
I did the sleep study last night and I would put it in the category of something you don’t want to do unless you really have to. The facility is very nice and I was in a private room with a nice bed and reasonable ambiance. I got there at 7:30 pm and about 8:30 they started wiring me up. I pretty much ended up with wires all over my body. They didn’t hurt or anything but you sure are aware that they are there. Around 10 they came in and I went to bed at which point they connected all of the wires to the computer. I then was supposed to go to sleep. With all of the wires and the unfamiliar surroundings it took me quite a while to get to sleep, but I did sleep some according to the technician. The first part of the test was diagnostic in nature. Sometime during the night the technician woke me up and at that point we were supposed to try this mask that blows air. The idea is that the pressure of the incoming air will keep the air passages open and thus allow you to sleep better. Well I first tried a mask that just forced air into the nose. That didn’t work at all. I couldn’t breathe through my mouth and I felt as if I was going to suffocate. Since I already have some shortness of breath the mask and the incoming air just exacerbated that problem. We then tried a mask that covered the nose and mouth so that I could breathe either through my nose or mouth. That was some better but I still had these breathless and suffocating feelings. I stuck it out as long as I could, thinking I might get used to it, but I finally had to call the technician and abandon that as well. So, I spent the rest of the night in diagnostic mode and slept pretty well. I have an appointment with the doctor on Wednesday and will find out then what the tests revealed. However, if wearing the mask is the solution to sleep apnea then I’m pretty sure I won’t be using that remedy

I have a couple of friends that have used/tried those machines. B-Pap, C-Pap??? Not sure. Anyway one gal, Rita, has had superb success with it and is thankful. Rick, my boss, on the other hand just can't seem to get the hang of it or tolerate it...whichever. I know that it would be a challenge for me with my claustrophobic issues but if I was already short of breath it would be too much like swimming is for me. To do it asleep would be beyond my capabilities I'm sure. It will be interesting to see what the Doc says. I know you'll let us know. Sorry I haven't called recently but I really don't have a good excuse. Just busy. Love you, Mary
Hi Daddy,
Thanks for keeping us updated on the blog. I know I already talked to you, but it is interesting to see some of the rest of the details.
I'm glad you have been sleeping better in general and I hope they have some other idea than the mask for resolving whatever issues they found.
Love ya,
Jeanine
Argh!!!
Your description is exactly what I thought the test would be like AND exactly why I will live with my sleep apnea! I can't even imagine putting something over my face and trying to sleep.
I am looking forward to seeing you this weekend Dad. Leah has invited me to go to church with her on Sunday.
Ken is planning to come up North with me, but he hasn't seen his girls in a long time and is hoping to spend most of his time with them.
So that's the plan at this moment!
Love you!
Alicia
Hi Grandpa -
I sure hope you get this figured out! I have to admit I'm not looking forward to how much worse you will beat me in Scrabble once you start sleeping well, but I'll be happy to swallow my pride in this instance :).
Hey Sarah,
How was that new expanded scrabble board to play on (other than the fact that it obviously enhanced Grandpa's prowess with words and he womped you)?
It looked pretty cool!
I sure wish I could access the scrabble thing from work. Not that I should be doing that kind of thing here but our network won't let me anyway. You all have a great Easter!
Hey Mary,
The scrabble board I am talking about is one of the presents Colleen gave to dad for Christmas. The board is bigger and the outside squares have a quadruple score.
I haven't heard from anyone on whether or not they like it.
Alicia
